Which Child care Solution is Right for You?

When it comes to child care, you have many options: nannies, babysitters, daycare centers, friends, relatives, or family. There are many factors to consider, but the most important will be finding someone you trust so you can set your worries aside and be productive while you're at work.

Here are some pros and cons on the various options you have.

Family

Most families will agree that having a relative help with childcare is the ideal solution. Relatives are trusted individuals that already have an established bond with your children so you can be sure that your children will be in responsible and loving hands. However, involving relatives with childcare can be more complicated than you think in some cases. When a nanny, babysitter, or daycare center doesn't' t meet your needs ,you can simply look for another solution and let the person go. This is not possible with relatives. Differences in opinion when it comes to raising your children can become difficult when family is involved. Many parents also feel less able to speak up about issues such as discipline and proper care when they feel like they "owe" their caregiver. If you do use a family member for child care, make sure to test things out for a brief period to see what the relationship will be like.

Babysitters and Nannies

Most families will agree that a nanny or babysitter is the next best thing to having a family member watch their children. Caregivers that come to your home allow your children to remain in the comfort of their own home and provide you with a great deal of flexibility. Not to mention the one on one attention that the nanny or sitter can provide to your children. Additionally, a nanny or sitter can be a very affordable option when you have more than 1 child. Day Care

Daycare is perhaps the most popular form of child care. There are many childcare centers around and if you choose this form of childcare, be sure to research the center extensively including checking references of other parents that use the center. Daycares will allow you less flexibility than nannies and sitters or families. They operate on a set schedule. Often times they charge you a fee when you run late. When you chose a daycare consider the quality of the caregiver, the student / teacher ratio and education of the caregivers. We recommend several visits to the center to get a feel for the teachers and the atmosphere in the center.
