Missing your Baby’s Firsts

368236231 300x201 Missing your Babys Firsts When I went back to work after 3 months of maternity leave and left my son in the care of my new nanny, I knew that I could possibly miss out on some of his most precious moments like first words and first steps – and I did. Moms know that these things can lead to nanny or babysitter jealousy and mommy guilt, but it doesn’t have to. I have a wonderful nanny that is very sensitive to the fact that I can’t be there for some of my son’s “firsts” and she does everything she can to let me share in the moments whenever possible. I’d like to share a few simple ideas that you and your nanny or babysitter can do to feel more connected.

1. Have a video camera handy to record baby’s “firsts”

Having a video camera available for your nanny or babysitter to record “firsts” when they happen is the best thing you can do to ensure you’re not missing any precious moments. My nanny enjoys recording little snippets of my son’s day, too. When I get home, I usually find clips of my son playing, making a mess during lunch, or discovering new things. By doing this my nanny is creating a beautiful library of photos and videos of my son and I feel like I’m not missing out on anything.

2. Send text, picture, or video messages

The best thing that can happen to me when I’m having a tough day at work is receiving a picture or video message on my cell phone from my nanny with a cute picture or video of my son. My nanny knows that she can brighten up my day by sending these little surprises.

3.  Keep a baby journal

My nanny keeps a daily diary journal for me where she records the activities of the day including new discoveries my son makes, new skills, funny moments, and of course all of his “firsts”. I love reading the journal entries about my son’s amazing development.

These simple steps make my life as a working mom easier. Ask your nanny or babysitter to do the same for you! You will treasure the photos and videos for a long time and your nanny or babysitter will have fun recording your baby’s precious moments for you.
